Tips for Achieving Your Perfect Tattoo

Anna's favorite thing about tattoos is how they serve as both art and a personal expression. She recommends this advice to help clients get the perfect tattoo:

1) Appreciate your artist's portfolio: research artists, look at their body of work. If you like 80-90% of an artist's work, chances are you'll love any tattoo you receive from them. If you don't see the style or type of tattoo your looking for in your chosen artist's portfolio, it is likely that what you want is not in a style they specialize in. If this is the case, they won't be able to give you the best tattoo they can do.

2) Work with your artist: the best tattoos result from collaboration between the artist and the client. Being overly rigid or micromanaging the design can lead to disappointment, as artists are human and must balance multiple factors to achieve the desired outcome.

3) Take care of yourself: one of the best ways clients can set themselves up for a great tattoo is through proper self-care. Staying hydrated in the days leading up to the appointment and eating well the night before and the morning of can improve both the experience and the outcome. Anna also recommends moisturizing the area for up to a month beforehand to keep the skin in top condition. Healthy skin holds ink better, heals faster, and reduces pain, while dry or damaged skin can make the process more painful and slow healing.

4) Check out the shop ahead of time: if possible, visiting the shop or scheduling a consultation beforehand is a great way to ensure a comfortable experience and avoid losing a deposit to scams. Since the tattoo process can be quite personal, it's important to feel at ease with your artist before the appointment.
